To all DAKOTAMAN Triathletes …..
We received word from Eric VanderStouwe, the Park Ranger for Lake Alvin advising of the abnormal water quality with increased levels of coliform bacteria. His message is posted below:
Hello Howard & Arlene,
Due from the recent flooding, Lake Alvin is experiencing abnormal water quality. Public waters are routinely tested for water quality and in order to protect the public health, swimming is not advised when increased coliform bacteria levels are found in the water. High levels of coliform bacteria may cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, headache, fever, respiratory illness or skin infections. While swimming is not advised, those who choose to swim are encouraged to reduce the amount of water that is swallowed, remove wet clothing and shower as soon as possible. For concerns and more information, please see information below:

Because of the quality of the water as indicated by Eric, we have decided to do a DUATHLON, instead of the Triathlon. Because of late notice and the nearness of the Race, this seemed like the best option given that postponing would cause inconveniences. We have known other instances where a Triathlon has had to be turned into a Duathlon.
Our DUATHLON will consist of a Run, Bike, and Run, with the first Run shorter, approximately 1-1/2 miles(or 8-15 minutes depending on fast you run); then the regular Bike Route, and then ending with the regular 3.2 mile Run. The exact distance for the first run will be decided tomorrow when Howard has a chance to mark it off, distance and route-wise. Details will be available after that, and you can check the AllSportCentral.com website or the DakotamanTriathlon.com website and details will also be reviewed at the pre-race meeting on Saturday, at 7:40 near the transition area. Packet-pickup will be as scheduled tomorrow at Scheel’s from 5:00PM – 8:30PM.
If you prefer not to do this DUATHLON Race, we would apply your entry fee to the 2014 DAKOTAMAN Triathlon, Individuals and Teams. Anyone who is registered would still get the t-shirt to you.
We would ask that you respond to this e-mail and let us know your intentions, otherwise if we don’t hear from you, we will look forward to seeing you all on Saturday, early morning, with Race time at 8:00 a.m, at Lake Alvin, for the DAKOTAMAN DUATHLON.
As this e-mail is going out to all Current and Past Participants in the DAKOTAMAN Triathlon, regardless of year, if you have not yet signed up for the Race, registration is still open for THE DUATHLON. Go to AllSportCentral.com, click on DAKOTAMAN to register on-line.

Thanks for your understanding, and we are sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
